Miguel Ángel Avilés‑Galán, Ph.D.
Educator | Historian | Workshop Facilitator. A Mexican-Canadian educator with more than 24 years of experience across secondary and post-secondary classrooms in Canada and Mexico.
A career spent inside classrooms, not adjacent to them.
I am a Mexican-Canadian educator with more than 24 years of experience teaching in secondary and post-secondary institutions in Canada and Mexico. I hold a Ph.D. in Latin American History from the University of British Columbia, a Master's degree in Hispanic Studies, and a Bachelor's degree in Hispanic Language and Literature from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).
Throughout my career I have taught History, Humanities, Spanish Language, and International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses. My experience includes university teaching, curriculum development, assessment design, and educational leadership across independent schools and higher education.
My current professional learning work examines how educators can respond thoughtfully to artificial intelligence through curriculum design, assessment redesign, differentiation, academic integrity, and teacher workflow. The emphasis is not on promoting particular products, but on helping teachers make defensible instructional decisions.
I am also the author of La Ruta Secreta del Mezcal and have published scholarly research in Latin American history, science and technology, and visual culture. That interdisciplinary background lets me bridge historical inquiry, language education, educational technology, and curriculum innovation. I currently teach at Crofton House School in Vancouver, British Columbia.

What teachers are actually asking.
How do I redesign assessments so the evidence of learning is still valid?
What evidence of learning is still valid in an AI-saturated world?
How can AI reduce administrative work without diminishing professional judgment?
How do I teach students to use AI ethically?
These are not technology questions. They are pedagogy questions — and they deserve answers from someone who has taught, assessed, and designed curriculum, not someone who has only read about it.
Workshops grounded in teaching practice.
